How is cupping performed?
Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine that make use of special cups to be put on the patients skin of the affected area for a few minutes in order to create a suction. The air pumped out of the cups, will create a vacuum which causes the skin to rise. The region where the cups are applied will become red as the blood vessels dilate. The cups are left on the skin for about 5 to 10 minutes. This method is called dry cupping as it does not involve the removal of blood.
Wet Cupping is done using the same process as dry cupping but only the cupping practitioner will use a thin blade to do superficial incisions in the skin. These incisions will allow the blood to flow out. The blood flowing out will usually be thick as it contains toxins, deoxigenated blood and waste.
Does cupping hurt?
Cupping therapy causes bruises and mild swelling on the skin and many people perception based on this may think that it is a very painful process.
On the contrary cupping is a gentle process and as the first cup is being removed the pressure inside the cups escaping will provide an instantaneous feeling of relief . The red hickey that appear on the skin is due to the suction of the cups and will last for a couple of days, it is caused by the dilatation of the blood vessels.

Sunnah Hijama
It is done on specific sunnah points and it is mostly recommended to do sunnah hijama on the 17th, 19th and 21st of each month (Islamic calendar)

Zareen Joomaye Ladoo our dietitian and cupping practitioner at the clinic.
She was awarded her degree in food science and nutrition at Taylor`s university,Malaysia. Her research work about Mauritian student eating habits was published in 2014 at the 5th international symposium on wellness,Healthy lifestyle and nutrition (ISWHN), held in Hat Yai, Thailand.
She further her studies in Cupping/Hijama, physiotherapy and human anatomy in Leicester, UK, awarded by the institute of clinically applied hijama therapy (ICAHT).
